The package passport
Labelling, also known as Print and Apply (or PandA) is often one of the primary functions that are considered when automating a pack line. The essential label, required for any shipped package, is the shipping label. But, depending on what kind of product is in the order, a package can quickly require 5 or more labels to clear legal and shipping carrier requirements.
Here are a few (of many) instances in which a package could require additional labelling:
Electronic products shipped with batteries require labels for each unique battery type included in the package.
Food and beverage packages need to be identified as perishable, and if cold chain packaging is used, immediate action labels to ensure the contents do not defrost.
Fragile packages need to be identified and may additionally require an orientation label to protect the product.
Pharmaceuticals may require hazardous materials labels if shipped with syringes.
Elective marketing labels such as logos to improve brand awareness and stickiness.
The PandA challenge
To complicate matters, most warehouses deal with an assortment of products that could require any combination of these labels. A fully manual process would require workers to inspect the contents of each package and apply the corresponding labels by hand, a process which is not only onerous and time consuming, but also prone to errors.
