Third party problems

Perhaps nowhere else is the need for speed and accuracy more important than with Third Party Logistics providers. Given that they are the final touchpoint before a package is shipped, the 3PL assumes the responsibility of maintaining the reputation of their client’s brand. The ability to personalize and ensure accurate, timely deliveries is paramount.

Paradoxically, in an industry where automated warehousing solutions should be ubiquitous, it has been rather slow to adopt the newest technologies. The reason for this is that 3PLs are forced to work under the constraints of short-term contracts, so any automation they do invest in must have a rapid ROI, or it must be able to be repurposed for a variety of use-cases.

And though the labor challenge is one that spans industries, 3PLs feel the pain stronger than most. The combination of high costs and low reliability is encountered more frequently by 3PLs as they are required to accommodate the varied and fluctuating peak seasons of many kinds of clients and products.

Flexible systems, adaptable solutions

It’s not a surprise then, that finding automation solutions in the world of 3PLs can be challenging. However, designing automated systems with durability and flexibility in mind can alleviate many of these operating pains. Modular conveyors systems that can be repurposed, customizable labelling machines, and variable data handling automation are all versatile investments that will prove their worth for the diverse range of clients that 3PL may service.
